When I first saw this swan, I gasped! The swan floating calmly on the water with the baby swan nestled on the back grabbed me right away. I knew I had to paint it, and it kicked off a new series on swans. I’ve painted swans before, but I find myself returning back to them. This depiction reminded me of the story of the children’s story the Ugly Duckling. I like to imagine this is the ugly duckling grown up to be a swan, protecting and sheltering the little baby swans from suffering the same hardship that it did. But, I’ll leave it up to you to form your own interpretation.

I had to look it up, but a baby swan is called a cygnet. 🦢
